Albums in Russia had become very popular at the beginning of the XIX century. Small galleries were in vogue. They were decorated in a Moroccan or leather bindings with gilt-edged pages.
Sweet memories
The era of sentimentalism influenced the content of the «book of remembrance,» which was filled with poetic messages and symbolic images. Between the landscape pages with drawn landscapes on them there used to be put dried flowers and leaves.
Those tiny flowers like Pushkin’s «flower, dried and lifeless» were related to the precious memories of the owner.
