However, he managed to go to this sunny region only in 1818. Before leaving, the young artist painted the views of St. Petersburg and its environs, which brought him fame.
But his real fame he had got in Italy. His pensionerstvo ended in 1823, but Sylvester Shchedrin has never left Italy. There were several reasons, and perhaps most important of them was a serious illness, which required the increasing of the medical treatment and staying in warm climate.
The painter died in incomplete forty years, leaving behind the great canvases.
Only a smaller part of his artistic heritage was transferred to Russia, where his works are greatly appreciated by numerous admirers of the famous Russian landscape painter.
The popularity of the Russian artist in Rome and especially in Naples was so great that he did dozen copies of his paintings sometime.
One can say that he was even spoiled by the Italians wanted to become the owners of his canvases. Yes, it was true and we know why!
Sylvester Shchedrin reached the great heights of landscape painting of the time.
That was to a large extent contributed by the external style of the artist: in contrast to the most of the contemporary artists, he had been painting extensively from nature.
